His gift was smarts, anticipation and an ability to see the whole play as it developed.

Gretzky could sense what could happen, where the others players would be in the following seconds. He could not beat his rivals with strength; he did not have a powerful shot; Wayne wasn’t the quickest of skaters. It was his vision, anticipation and intelligence that set him apart. Gretzky often claimed he could sense where players were without actually seeing them. Then he could pass without really looking.

Wayne was always approachable despite his fame. Gretzky was always ready to sign autographs. He new that for that fan, that youngster, it could seem like the greatest thing that ever happened in his life.

The Great Gretzky was great as a kid, great as a teenager and finally perhaps even greater as a pro in the NHL. Wayne always proved worthy of his moniker, the Great One.

The Edmonton Oilers, now in financial difficulty, traded Wayne to the L.A. Kings in 1988. Gretzky played in L.A. for eight years and went on to St Louis and then to the Rangers.

It was with L.A. that Gretzky became the all-time points record holder with 1,851, surpassing Gordy Howe. 4 years later Gretzky passed his boyhood icon once more with his 802nd goal.

By the time Gretzky retired in 1999 he had 2,857 points recorded in the NHL. Howe’s record had been more than 1,000 less. More of a play-maker than a scorer, his goals performance was still a most satisfactory 894 in a 20 year career, once more a record for the NHL.
